Noise-enhanced transmission efficacy of aperiodic signals in nonlinear systems

چکیده
Aperiodic stochastic resonance proposed by Collins et al 1,2 describes the noiseenhanced effect in neural excitable systems for transmitting aperiodic (arbitrary) signals. This notion emphasizes the shape matching between the input and the output signals in biological information processing, and also breaks the limitation of stochastic resonance systems with periodic inputs. In order to characterize the information-carrying signal through the nonlinear system, such measures as the cross-correlation coefficient 1–3, the mutual information , the Kullback entropy 5 and the channel capacity 6 are utilized. Later, the notion of aperiodic stochastic resonance, as an outstanding extension of conventional stochastic resonance, inspired its investigation in the area of biological information processing 7–14. However, some interesting questions have not yet been touched upon. For instance, which type of

Nonlinear Signal Propagation Enhanced by noise via Stochastic Resonance
A model is developed for a nonlinear line of coupled noisy threshold elements. The propagation on the line of various information-carrying signals, periodic, aperiodic or random, is analyzed. Different measures quantifying the efficacy of the propagation are calculated, including signal-to-noise ratio, cross-correlation measures, information-theoretic measures and propagation length. These meas...

Our previous work on stochastic resonance (SR) in threshold based systems proved that the SR effect is dependent on the nature of the input signal distribution; more specifically, for certain types of signal distribution SR is not observed [Das A, Stocks NG, Nikitin A, Hines EL. Quantifying stochastic resonance in a single threshold detector for random aperiodic signals. Fluctuation Noise Lett ...
متن کاملNonlinear Multiuser Receiver for Optimized Chaos-Based DS-CDMA Systems
Chaos based communications have drawn increasing attention over the past years. Chaotic signals are derived from non-linear dynamic systems. They are aperiodic, broadband and deterministic signals that appear random in the time domain. Because of these properties, chaotic signals have been proposed to generate spreading sequences for wide-band secure communication recently. Like conventional DS...
متن کاملSimulation of Circuits Demonstrating Stochastic Resonance
In certain dynamical systems, the addition of noise can assist the detection of a signal and not degrade it as normally expected. This is possible via a phenomenon termed stochastic resonance (SR) . The response of a nonlinear system to a sub-threshold periodic input signal is optimal for some non-zero value of noise intensity. Using the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) we can characterise SR — as t...
متن کاملStochastic resonance for nonlinear sensors with saturation.
We analyze the transmission of a noisy signal by sensor devices which are linear for small inputs and saturate at large inputs. Large information-carrying signals are thus distorted in their transmission. We demonstrate conditions where addition of noise to such large input signals can reduce the distortion that they undergo in the transmission. This is established for periodic, as well as aper...
